Sometimes, change begins with simply noticing what other people have learned to overlook.
For me, it began with women in my own community.
I saw women who were hardworking, intelligent and full of ideas, yet some opportunities seemed to pass them by. Not because they were lazy. Not because they lacked ambition. And certainly not because they lacked ability.
They simply lacked access.
I watched women hesitate when faced with a computer. I saw the fear of technology turn into the belief that perhaps those opportunities were meant for someone else. And I kept thinking about how easily a person's future can be limited when they have never been given the chance to learn.
That stayed with me.
I began to ask myself a simple question:
What could happen if someone opened the door for them?
What if a woman who had never touched a computer was given the confidence to use one? What if she learned how to market her business online, manage her finances, create digital content or use technology to find new opportunities? What if, instead of telling herself “I can’t,” she could finally say, “Let me try”?
That question became the beginning of Shemica Women Empowerment.
I started Shemica because I wanted to create a space where women and young people could come without fear, learn without shame and discover that they are capable of much more than they may have believed.
Our work is not simply about computers, business or digital skills.
It is about that moment when a woman realises, perhaps for the first time, “I can do this.”
It is about the mother who gains a skill and can now create a new opportunity for her family. It is about the young person who discovers a talent and begins to see a future they had never imagined. It is about turning uncertainty into confidence and potential into possibility.
Over time, we have watched learners walk into our training spaces unsure of themselves and leave with something far more valuable than a certificate: belief in themselves.
And that is what continues to inspire me.
Every graduation is a reminder that the distance between where someone is and where they want to be can sometimes be much smaller than it looks.
Sometimes, all that is missing is a chance.
- A chance to learn.
- A chance to be supported.
- A chance to believe.
- A chance to begin.
Shemica was created to provide that chance.
We are building a future where women and youth are not left behind because they lack access to technology, knowledge or opportunity. A future where a woman’s circumstances do not define her potential. A future where young people can develop the skills they need to participate, create and lead.
I often think about those women who inspired me to begin this journey.
They reminded me that empowerment does not always have to start with something big.
Sometimes, it starts with a classroom.
Sometimes, it starts with a computer.
Sometimes, it starts with one person believing in another person.
And sometimes, one open door is enough to change a life.
That is the door we are building at Shemica.
And we are committed to keeping it open.
